The Fairest of Seasons

Fall has always been my favorite season, even while growing up in Atlanta where it was rather brown and uneventful. The other seasons are lovely in their own ways, but in autumn the air just feels so right. The sky is so blue, the clouds are so dramatically sculpted, and if you live in New England the warm colors of the foliage are exquisite (but all too short-lived).
While the season doesn’t technically begin until the autumnal equinox in late September, the end of August always signals it for me. Maybe it’s just anticipation, but the mornings are already a little cooler.
I was thrilled to have found this interactive map, which shows a representation of where the “peak color” is at a given point in the season. If you follow the link, press the “play” button to see how the wave of color washes over the region from the northwest to the southeast (it’s over just a little sooner than you’d like, just like the real thing). You can slow it down by clicking on a particular day in the calendar, to inch the color forward (or backward) a day at a time. I’m already planning a little vacation consisting of bicycling around and drinking it all in.
