Sigur Rós: Heima
One of my favorite bands, the Icelandic Sigur Rós (which translates to “victory rose”), is producing a film called Heima (meaning “at home”), which I can’t wait to see in its entirety. You can experience the stunningly beautiful trailer here in its intended context (if your browser is able to play high-resolution QuickTime movies), or here on YouTube (if you want a faster-loading—but much lower-quality—presentation).
Sigur Rós is great to listen to while in the studio painting (or otherwise musing around); their music resonates with a depth and complexity of emotion that is spellbinding. Their website offers plenty of free music downloads, and a helpful Icelandic pronunciation guide.
I thought Sigur Ros sung in a kind of made-up language, like one of my other favorite bands, the French prog-rock band Magma.

Thanks for the link to Magma; I hadn’t heard of them before. Interesting that ITMS labels them as “jazz.”
I definitely gravitate toward music sung in languages I don’t understand. Some other studio faves of mine for this very reason: Stereolab, Mogwai, Cocteau Twins & My Bloody Valentine (not sure that’s their official site). And of course, Flock of Seagulls.
